Creating a Great Sports Anthem May Not Be as Easy as it Once Was

I wanted to respond to this article in a more in-depth fashion. I think that the author has a valid point. He describes that the things that make an anthem good is a hard hitting backbeat and some trash-talking lyrics. That’s what made “The Super Bowl Shuffle” connect with Chicagoans during the Bears’ historic 1985 run to the title. As he puts it, no one wants to belt out a ballad about Brian Urlacher. Sports fans are running hot on adrenaline and testosterone (for the most part) and need something to bang their head to, not heartfelt lyrics about the beauty of one’s play. Once our “American Idol” driven society can get past that, maybe we can find another anthem along the lines of the “Shuffle” or “We Will Rock You.”
