Hip-Hop Culture Contributes to NBA’s Bad Rap
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A11188-2004Nov24.html
I think that this article is similar to the documentary on hip-hop that we watched for class a week or so ago. It’s not that hip hop itself is bad, but some of the misogynistic and/or violent messages that come across in the songs have a lot to do with the negative image that is on display (or was at the time). This article came on the heels of the brawl that involved NBA players and fans that took place in Detroit in late 2004. It was a big deal at the time and the NBA as a whole was painted in some media circles as a bunch of me first thugs and that image was attributed to the hip hop culture in the NBA. This incident had a domino effect around the league, eventually leading to the banning of headphones during warm-ups and a league-wide dress code for players on the sideline and at press conferences in an effort to clean up the image of the NBA.
