Liveness
Out of all of the chapters that we’ve had to read from The Popular Music Studies Reader, I feel that Auslander’s “Liveness” is the closest in terms of relation to my scope of focus. Part of his subtitle (the anxiety of stimulation) is really what I’m attempting to describe at least in the introductory passages of my essay. We all know that music is an integral part of daily life, but why? That’s what I’m trying to discover. What makes some songs connect to these rabid sports fans while others do nothing but keep the teenyboppers in the crowd happy? Why has “Crazy Train” stood out while songs like “The Beast” and other generic hip hop or rock fall out of style within one season?
Auslander also discusses the aspect of the videotron, which is a crucial portion to any live sports experience. As I mentioned in my class blog post on this article, I have caught myself looking at the video screen as opposed to the live action and then I kick myself for wasting money on a ticket. Might as well have just stayed home and watched it on television if I’m watching the big screen, right?
