“We are the Champions”: Masculinities, Sports and Popular Music
“We are the Champions”: Masculinities, Sports and Popular Music Ken McLeod. Popular Music and Society. Bowling Green: Dec 2006. Vol. 29, Iss. 5; pg. 531, 18 pgs
This article points out something that I hadn’t even thought to even give a second thought to. McLeod mentions the irony of an iconic gay frontman, in this case Queen’s Freddie Mercury, being the voice behind timeless anthems in the hypermasculinized world of sport. I hadn’t even thought of gender roles until reading this article, and now I definitely have to at least consider them before diving into the essay. He uses a lot of three-dollar words in his piece which can make it hard to navigate at times, but there’s a lot of useful information in here that I can cite in my essay. Aside from the gender/sexuality issues, he brings up the dichotomous relationship between music and sport which happens to be my focus. Amazing how things just work out sometimes, huh?
